WELCOME TO PSMG EAST AFRICA

The Poor Servants of the Mother of God (PSMG) Sisters is an international religious congregation founded in 1872 in London, England. Our mission is to serve the poor, sick, and marginalized, particularly women and children. In Kenya, the SMG Sisters established their first community in 1985 in the Diocese of Kitui, at the invitation of the late Bishop William Dunne. Since then, they have expanded their presence across several dioceses in Kenya and Tanzania.

Our History

The Poor Servants of the Mother of God (PSMG) began their mission in Kenya in 1973 through healthcare work in Mutito and gradually expanded to several communities across Kenya and into Tanzania. Starting with Mutito, where they formed their first Kenyan community in 1985, they later established communities in Mwingi, Mulutu, Ting’ang’a, Chepchoina, Sirende, Ikutha, and Huruvi (Tanzania). Their ministries have included healthcare through dispensaries, education, early childhood development, pastoral outreach, catechetical programs, agriculture and community empowerment. Notably, Mwingi saw the development of the Frances Taylor Family Learning Center, while Mulutu and Ting’ang’a communities set up dispensaries and educational initiatives. Local vocations began in 1994, strengthening the Kenyan presence within the congregation. The Sisters’ work, supported by bishops, parish priests, and benefactors, has focused on living among the people and responding to their spiritual and social needs through faith, compassion, and service.
